Dodgy horn and high pitched whining

Hello there!

I have an SV650s and I have two problems I was wondering if anyone had any advice for:

1.) My horn seems to work intermittently. Within the first 20 minutes of riding it seems to be fine, but after that it just stops working. I've heard that the stock horn is a bit crapola so i'm tempted to just replace it (only around £10 for a new one) but I was just wondering if anyone had any thought on this? Wiring maybe? Rusty contacts?

2.) I sometimes get a high pitched whining when I am riding, imagine the noise the SV makes when you first time you turn on the ignition, but a lot tinnier and more high pitched. Tis driving me nuts xD It seems to be coming from under the fuel tank but I could easily be wrong.

Any ideas?

1/ I have heard that the sv horn can stop because of its location next to the radiator which heats it up and stops it working, how true that is im not sure as im a mechtard

2/ Is the high pitched whining more obvious when *partner is pillion

1) Radiator seems to cook the horn (at least on my pointy) filling it with WD40 every now and again seems to help it for a while. I have been meaning to replace and relocate.

2) Does this vary with speed/rpm, how tight is your chain?

Nope, seems to be consistent whether I am stationary or moving. Just put a new sprocket and chain on her, and the problem existed before and after

Those damn horns, what kind of an idiot thought that bolting it to the back of the radiator was a good idea? Mine did the same so I moved it and it is now located in the nose cone. I did have it on the fork leg for a while, but this looked very ugly.

With the whine, has your air box been modified at all? I am not a very good mechanic so could be way off here, but could it be some kind of induction noise?

Definitely a Suzuki design flaw, the genius that thought to locate it there was not thinking at all. My GSXR has the same "problem" and solved by relocating somewhere sensible.

Yep same as on me SV1000...

the whinning sounds like stardard fuel injection whine, if you say it sounds like the ignition noise. I can hear mine sometimes but only at idle due to the beowulf can

Yet my SV1000 horn has worked perfectly since new in 2003. I have been presented with a couple of Suzukis suffering the same thing, and have solved this by correct adjustment of the horn, no relocation was needed.

The stock horns are rubbish anyway. I prefer fitting a Stebel Nautilus. You can be sure that other road users are alerted to your presence when using one.

£35 and easy to fit (30 min job).
