Hi everyone, I just bought an SV 99 model I think and I've heard stuff about oil starvation when doing wheelies. I was going to give the stunting away when I sold my GSXR but couldn't do it
![]() I've done a couple of searches and not much came up. What's the deal with the baffle plate and could it be put in mine? Anyone have any ideas on how do make an oil pickup that works properly? I have no problems manufacturing it but no idea with the design. Keeping the revs low isn't a problem either. Cheers ![]() |

Also, does this model have a tip over sensor?

From memory only the really early models didn't have the oil baffle plate fitted, the details are in the official manual somewhwere.

There's a lot of people who'll tell you that it's posible to modify it... But I've never seen anyone say they've actually done it.

99s didn't need a baffle plate cause they had the baffle cast into the crankcase
early 00s they did away with the casting to save a few grams of weight and prolly 3pence in manufacturing cost, a so called "improvement" it was quicky discovered that without the baffle, the oil would cavitate the oil pump, the few thousand that were made were recalled, and the baffle was retrofitted back in AFIK no one has succesfully relocated the baffle to prevent loss of oil while wheelieing my opinion is to devise a dry sump system for the SV |

Dry sumps are fitted to amongst others, Rotax engines (eg aprillia), Harley Davidsons, Buells.
There is an oil tank fitted to the frame that feeds the normal oil pump. A second oil pump sucks any oil from the sump and returns it to the tank. The sump is virtually empty when running, hence "dry sump". I'm not sure of it's value in a road bike, you end up with a hot tank to burn your leg on, or in the case of the aprillia pegaso, to heat the headstock, and make the steering bearings fail. It would help with stunts though. |

There's some pro-stunter around that uses an SV, so it can be done.
I've just added a bit more oil to mine and am hoping it'll work... I do have a complete spare engine in bits if it doesn't, though ![]() My wheelies still aren't perfect, but i can keep it up for a reasonable distance, at least - just kinda got the balance point sorted on the TRX, but need a bit more practice on the SV. |

I emailed Dan from scootertrash in michigan but he doesn't have the internet... apparently he sorted something out so it didn't run out of oil. He's been through 5 or 6 motors I've been told though. I know Christian Pfeiffer used one before being signed with Ducati also but haven't got around to asking yet

Christian Pfeiffer used to take a spare bike to every show though- his approach was just to blow them up and swap over.
