Default Santa

This one is mostly for those with kids...

The wife is adamant that she won't lie to our kids (3yr old and baby) about Santa and will tell them there's no such thing - this at least partly due to her own parents lying to her.

I have mixed feelings about this as I want the kids to enjoy their childhood as much as possible, and I don't see anything wrong with them believing in whatever they choose to while they are young. I also think kids are getting far too commercialised and the whole Santa thing just makes it worse. Lastly, I don't think I'm gonna win the argument anyway.

Really just wondering what other peoples thoughts are on this? If you have kids what do you tell them? Is it right or wrong to tell kids there is a Santa? Is it actually going to affect them either way? Are the other parents at nursery going to demonise us when our kids tell their kids it's all made up?

St. Nicholas is well in the past.
OK it is a magical time if they belive, but its a time of year were you particualy think of others less fortunate.
Its that bad to tell them St Nick is still about but as your mrs is right dont put your neck on the block.

My kids are 12, 9 and 6. When the eldest was 4 someone told her santa didnt exist and she was devastated, so we played a little trick which ended up in her getting an unexpected present and she believed whole-heartedly again. In due course she worked it out for herself, along with the easter bunny, tooth fairy etc..
I am now having a battle with the middle one who keeps telling the youngest santa's not real. It is a magical time for them. They grow up and get 'streetwise' so quickly, I really cant see the harm in a little white lie that brings some 'magic' into their lives.

where does it all end? There's no tooth fairy, no super heroes, mickey and minnie mouse are just puppets, no gold at the end of the rainbow, etc . Why make your life difficult just go with the flow the kid is only 3 I doubt they will be able to reason the truth anyway. Kids grow up fast enough.

The problem with telling your child that he doesnt exist is that the rest of their friends will believe he does, so you are not just spoiling it for your own child but other kids as well.

Honestly I think it is nothing more then part of childhood innocence to believe in Santa.

When I was little I made a trap to see if the tooth fairy existed. I put my tooth in a yoghurt pot with cling film over the top. When I woke up there was 50p in the pot under the cling film!!!!

Didn't occur to me that if she didn't exist then it must be my mum..... who helped me make the trap. Duh!

Totally agree!

It could also start an argument when they go to school, so best to leave it be and let them figure it out for themselves.
We don't make a big deal about Santa to our 4 yr old and to be honest she's not all that fussed.
Funny, was discussing this just the other day with one of the dads at school.
