Grandad had a stroke
I was wondering if people could just let me know a bit about them. My Grandad is in his early eighties and has been very poorly on and off for over a year now. This weekend Dr's believe he suffered a minor stroke. Seems to be recovering well now, but did loose his speech. This also seems to be returning to normal.
Is there a likely hood of this happening again and do people make full recoveries? Last edited by Kate Moss; 08-09-08 at 11:15 AM. |

Re: Grandad had a stroke
It's a bit cold and technical, but wikipedia has an article that explains more than you could ever need to know...

Re: Grandad had a stroke
My 80-odd yr old grandad had a stroke a few years ago, recovered well enough and hasn't had one since but they affect people very differently (as most things do). The stroke had left him with speech difficulties but like yours he slowly returned to normal. AFAIK, many people do make full recoveries. Obviously the older a person is the more increased the risk but that is the same with anything really.
Fingers crossed he's ok anyway hun, he's got a good caring family by the sounds of it, always helps |

Re: Grandad had a stroke
There are different kinds - the clot variety and the haemorhage variety, plus a stroke will affect everyone differently - Google the Brain and Spine helpline - fantastic organisation to ask advice - I couldnt have got through the aftermath of my haemorhage without them

Re: Grandad had a stroke
My grandad had loads... Mainly very minor but a couple of more serious ones, over the course of about a decade. He used to say he was working toward the record. He died peacefully of, well, old age at 94, he did suffer some long term effects from his 2 major strokes but nothing that held him back particularily.
My dad, who's 63, had a minor stroke last year. He lost some movement and a lot of sensation down one side but luckily made a full recovery. Now it's served as a handy lifestyle warning, much less dramatic than a heart attack too but he's cleaned up his act. Yes, they can be very bad news but not always, I have no idea how typical those two are
