Cam chain is a big job, I can't remember completely but I think it may mean removing the head.

I did one on a K5 or therabouts. Other option could be a broken cam chain guide/tensioner follower both also very unlikely. You would be able to see these from the top with the cam cover off and the camchain out.

Depends if you took spring out before removing tensioner

Pointy engine tensioner is nothing like that cbr one

Spring was removed before unbolting the tensioner, so it was definitely fully extended before touching it.

I actually manually pushed to guide/blade whatever its called when I had the tensioner it out, emulating the job of the tensioner. Couldn't feel any sort of resistance that would be expected from taking up chain slack. pushed all the way until it hit a solid stop without any feeling of gradual tension. no idea what it stops against. But it's safe to say that given my tensioner is good, engine noise is definitely not right. It must certainly be a chain issue. Either way so far I've had a quote of £400 to do the lot.

Only problem is I can't get the bike in for another 4 weeks. all mechanics seem to be very busy this time of year.

Now i'm up at 5am for a 1.5 hour commute to work and 1.5 hour commute back via bus! back at 8pm.

I'm knackered. need this sorted ASAP.

Hmmm... never used a mobile mechanic. Would have thought this sort of job requires a proper garage?

I suppose I'll check them out.

thanks.

Problem with that is I'd not get more than £500 for it. Then I don't know what costly problem I'd encounter in the future with another bike. If I get the cam chains sorted I know they're good for years then!

thats true but in the meantime your spending money and time on commuting that could otherwise be spent on another bike.

also how much is a new camchain going to cost.. bets its no less that £500.

dont think of it as losses but on how much it has saved you so far. price of bike via cost of commuting. if your quids in then technically the bike has cost you nothing.

Unless my engine was screwed completely I wouldn't be able to trust a used engine. My communte costs right now are minimal. £25/week. I can justify £500 on a repair on my own engine. I know this engine, I know how it feels and sounds. And I know how well I've treated it. I just want my bike fixed

If you are sure the engine wasn't abused before you got it assuming you got it 2nd hand or from new and the rest of the engine is secure then I'd say repair it as at least you know the work has been done and hopefully correct.

I wish I had done this work on mine, but glad I haven't had to as I would gladly ride over and help but as stated I have not so don't have the experience on these engines. The engine in my Avatar was one of many Honda CX500 engine rebuilds that I've done for myself over the the years from the Crank-Shaft up.

However as there are plenty of SV650s with well over your mileage and even some with over 100,000 miles on the original Cam-Chain etc it just makes me wonder why it's gone

Do you know any other bikers who might be able to help or point you to a decent fixer?
