Default Oil change by Mileage or time ?

Sorry for another oil change thread.

I was just curious, I know the oil interval for an sv is 3500 miles, but does this also include the OR 12 months too?

I’m coming up to a year since my last oil and filter change and not done many miles since then (Bike sat in garage most of the time).

shall i change the oil ?

Personally I would not leave oil in engine for more than 12 months - short journeys tend to be hard on oil if it never gets hot enough to boil off acidic water from combustion it can cause corrosion in the engine, but no need to change filter, just change the oil - makes the job a bit easier.

Also worth changing brake fluid and coolant at two years irrespective of mileage.

Several oil suppliers on eBay like Opie Oils usually have offers of around £20 for 4 litres including delivery, I've been getting Shell Advance AX7 for the past couple of years at that price and it's delivered within 2 days of ordering.

I use the Smith and Allen too; fortunately I live close enough to pick it up.
Changed the oil and filter in the SV every year. It doesn't cost much and helps look after the engine.

Wow!You lucky B

You must get it dead cheap?

I had Motul MA2 in the bike and that was fine but the Smith and Allen is even smoother and my gears and clutch are as slick as hell and my engine, for 20k,is very smooth and pretty quiet

Sound clip.

Brake fluid yes, as it absorbs moisture.

Modern coolants are good for at least 5 years, the OEM coolant in cars is good for 10years before it needs replacing. The ethylene glycol anti-freeze part does not wear out as such. the limit on life has always been the corrosion inhibiting additives, with modern Organic acid and hybrid organic acid additives ( OAT and HOAT) I am happy to leave them in a bike 5 years.
