It's a common problem with VFR so not entirely surprising.

Brother had his RR fail on his VFR halfway back from Spalding to Wolverhampton, got within a mile of his house, but that VFR was heavy to push, especially in the pouring rain that had been all over the country all day.... Both he and other two brothers with CBR600s fitted computer fans to their RRs, is it the fairing that shields them from cooling wind ?

Yep. My previous one had a Tourmax Reg Rec hard wired in. The current one has the stock one that I'll change out at some point.

Tested the charging system on the DRZ. New battery is very low again. I've got a feeling the stator isn't great. Getting resisitance on a static test, but not the numbers the service manual wants. Also not getting any voltage when engine is running from the stator side of the plug. Bit odd as there should be something. Recharging the battery and then starting again. I want to open up the cover and loctite all the bolts that notoriously come loose and kill the stator on these bikes. There's always something in every bike that is a known needed fix.

PC fans are a common addition on VFR's especially on the gen5 as the reg/rec is hidden away under the bodywork below the seat. On the gen6 it's on the right of the headstock so it should get some breeze there.

It's also quite common on the VFR forums for people to install a voltmeter. At least you get some warning that way.

The lack of voltage is odd. Were you testing voltage to earth or across each phase?

Yep every bike has its Achilles heel.

stupid question but did you have your meter set correctly to ac? I'm not saying I've set it to dc...

...wait, yes I am.

If you've got a magnet spinning next to an intact coil (with no breaks and not shorted/grounded) it will produce a voltage.

On my F800ST i have now installed a voltmeter, as these too can through RR's if you're unlucky, and the stators can fail due to overheating.
It also helps when you're starting the bike up for the first time in a few weeks and not sure what state the battery is in!

I'm getting some sort of reading now. My multimeter only has two ac settings though, neither of which are in the right range for a decipherable reading. It jumps around a lot too.

The stator actually looks ok... doesn't it?

So service manual states resistance on the stator should be 0.5 to 1.25 ohms each coil. I'm getting 1.5 , 1.5 and 1.6 on each of the three coils. Is that a sign it gone then? Something is definitely up although it all looks fine.
