Default How to Fit Airhorns on the Pointy SV.

I fitted a Stebel "Nautilus" airhorn unit to my SV on Saturday prior to the Glasgow Easter Egg run on Sunday. As many of you will have experienced, the standard meeper is rubbish and on some pointies (it would seem), cuts out due to heat from the engine when left in the standard location. I moved mine away and it was cured.

I still wanted to upgrade the sound a bit however..... so followed the lead of BlueFlame and fitted the Stebel. You can get one from NippyNormans online or from your local Halfwits.

NEVER FOLLOW SOMEONE ELSES INSTRUCTIONS BLINDLY - CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURERS LEAFLET ETC FIRST, and NEVER leave out a fuse of the correct value. I ACCEPT NO LIABILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS (so there!)

NOTE TO ADMIN - If you wish to use this on the "How To" section - feel free.

Cheers,

Garry

A good job well done.

However, I did read this thread and anticipated it was going to be about proper airhorns.

I rather thought that you might drop by sir.......

....they ARE proper air horns (as I'm sure YOU would know).

Just NOT like....

OR

But IF I really wanted to, I'm sure I could manage. (Might end up looking like a vespa though!)

Did any of you fit the horn in addition to the standard horn, or did you disconnect/bypass it? I picked up one of the stebel nautilus horns yesterday and am a little unsure on how to wire it. I'm OK with fitting it to the bike etc but wasn't sure which wiring configuration to use. Here's the options from the back of the box

Funny you should ask.

Originally, I bypassed the stock horn & it found a new home in my shed somewhere.

But then one day whilst sorting the shed out, I found it again, and I was bored the day after, so I added it back again. So far, I'm liking the sound of the stock horn + 2x Stebel Magnums + 2x Marine airhorns (and no Garry, it doesn't look like a vespa ).

As for the wiring, check out this thread, and read my post. http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=113827 (bottom right pic btw )

Excellent set of instructions there Garry. I followed them almost to the letter, (having of course read the manufacturers stuff first). The only changes I made was to use three short aluminium plates (from B&Q), one (50mm) off the top radiator bolt to tuck the relay in behind, and two 60mm and 140mm off the bottom and the top bolts to fix the Nautilus, it felt too wobbly on the one and I was concerned about it loosening and pivoting around. The job took me about two hours and cost about £35.

When I fitted one of those to a Yamaha FZ6S I split the compressor from the horn and mounted them seperately. The compressor went under the injection rail on top of the crankcases, and the horn went up front inside the left fairing. There wasn't anywhere that was big enough or had strong enough mounting points to take the complete unit. I joined the two pieces together using a hose connector araldited into the horn unit and some black heater pipe I got from the local car parts place.

Are you sure that bracket will hold the horn/compressor in that position? It's a heavy old unit and it may need bracing off the top of the rad to stop it slipping down and round.

Yeah, I've split mine too. Er, and then never fitted it. There's a new version out that's slightly more compact, designed for bike use, by the way. Same design but the horn's a different shape.

I did not know you can split these. Is it just the Nautilus you can split or the Compact Nautilus to? I need a better horn on my VFR but there seems to be no space any where for it. A separate compressor and mini-trumpets might just work!

Can anyone shed light on how to split these units?

You just have to cut down the side of the "horn" where it wraps around the compressor, then epoxy or plastic weld a hose union onto the horn part (or fit a tube by whatever means you can) and attach that to the compressor. I've got some pics somewhere, I'll see if I can find 'em.
