Default HELP needed please SV650

I think this is the place to ask ?

A friend of mine emailed me about his K2 sv650s yesterday, can anybody help ? :

"Dragged the SV650s out of mothballs last week, the front brake's seized but that's easily sorted. The big problem is when I tried to start it.

After charging the battery overnight it only had enough juice to rattle the starter motor a bit. Took a week to get a new battery - put it on - started - running on the front cylinder only accompanied by a lot of farting and banging from, I assume, the rear cylinder firing occasionally. That's not unusual after standing for 9 months, but it usually clears up when it gets warm - but this time opening the throttle slightly doesn't accelerate the engine, just more sucking and banging then stalls.

Took the plugs out (new last year - done about 100 miles) and cleaned and gapped. Put them back in - starts - still running on front cylinder only (can tell coz the rear exhaust's cooler).

Got a spare plug, plugged it into the rear HT lead, held it against a ground - no spark.

Took the front plug out to try it in the back cylinder but first checked the spark - seemed really weak and dancing around, seemed to be emanating from inside the plug.

Plug in back cylinder only - not firing at all.

Took the coils off and wired the front coil to the rear wiring - Back cylinder now firing.

So tried wiring the back coil to the front cylinder - firing!! Yay! - but a bit puzzled as to why.

Now it starts properly and ticks over (with choke) quite smoothly - but open the throttle and same symptoms as before - bang! suck! stall!

Next the fuel is suspect, almost a year old. Drained out 6 litres of the stuff and bought some new 90-RON and refilled. Re-started - exactly the same

Checked all the electrical connections, cleaned and WD40'd - no difference so gave up.

I'm wondering how the ignition timing works on these - whether the stator-plate might want to move but be seized, or whether the problem is with the ECU.

Sorry it's a bit long, but any thoughts from the description?"

Thanks in advance

Sounds like the carbs might benefit from a good clean through or spray with carb cleaner. You could open the fuel bowls and clean all the crap out of them, likely full of powdered fuel residue from a long stand.

Electrically you might well just have corrosion on some of the connections, particularly the earthing points. Simply removing and reinstalling the coils probably did some good in that respect as it would have reseated the spade connectors better.

Is the choke and its associated carbs bits moving freely at the carbs? They can get stuck after time.
