Default What's this rattle

Hmm. Getting annoyed at this one. For ages my bike's had a fairly nasty rattle, only at idle. It goes away with the clutch in, so I've kind of assumed it's the clutch, seems like common sense right? But I swapped the whole clutch last week with my spare, and it still does it just the same. The best way I can describe the noise is that it's just like a big diesel idling (only quieter of course!) A wee bit more metallic but that's just what it's like. I don't think it's a problem, it's just annoying me that I can't sort it. I'm pretty sure it didn't used to do it, but then it's always possible.

Clutch release bearing will make that sort of noise, starts off like a screech/squeek but near the end it just becomes a rattle.

Only ever done them on cars and it was never a really hard job, often clutch plates had to be replaced as well though. The bearing itself for the cars I worked on were never more than between ?7 - ?15

It may not even be this though, but thats my guess

i think my bike has this screech/squeek problem wen pulling away when the bike/clutch is cold, it feels a little snatchy and makes a squeeking sound . but after 2 mins of driving its fine on pull aways

Its the rear cam chain on my bike, well the manual cam chain adjuster.

+1

or it is the bearings on or the little clutch pushrod itself rattling about ...

Hmm, sounds plausible... I've had an occasional screech/graunchy noise when letting the clutch out from cold too, and a hesitation of the clutch releasing, but I've always assumed that's just a notched basket. But I suppose it could be part of the same thing. What actual part do you have in mind, the wee flat roller bearing thing that sits in the clutch mechanism itself? Not quite sure what part you mean, I'll have held one in my hands but I don't know what anything's called

Fair guess but it's not cam chains, I've got that noise imprinted in my brain

Do you mean the ball and ramp assembly on the end of the cable, on the LHS behind the plastic cover? It's not that, if that's what you had in mind, the noise is definately right hand side. But again, I might be misunderstanding the part you have in mind

Cheers folks!

My clutch is getting pretty bad when cold, biting point is much further out and it tends to grab. Then again it does get some abuse. At least I have a few spares...

Also the pushrod is in 2 parts, the external one in from the LHS and worm drive and the center piece which takes pressure from worm drive part to the release bearing assembly, it could be that rattling about inside?
