if you want to take the engine apart get a haynes manual and the correct tools, it'll tell you everything you need to know

i'll be honest though, i'd feel fairly confident taking the SV down to it's component parts, but reassembling the gearbox is about the only thing i wouldn't want to attempt on my own...

Right start with the simple stuff like is the lever moving freely? Will it select gears at a standstill (you have to rock the bike about a bit to get them to engage/disengage)

I would guess that the end of the selector shaft being hit has damaged the external shift mechanism, i.e shift star, detent arm and spring etc Sounds plausible that the shift mechanism is damaged as it won't shift through "third"

You need to take the RHScover off to get to this, I'd drain the coolant, but you can lay the bike on it's side a little more and not have to drain the oil.

If there is no damage to the detent mechanism then it's total engine strip time

Isn't as scary as it looks, but requires care.

yep, tbh the box is the only part of the bike where i can't visualise how it's assembled, which puts me off taking it apart

Replaced them before and I can summarise it in brief.

There's lots of cogs and forks n stuff
