Cleaning the inside of a Shoei XR1000

My helmet has begun to pong. How the hell do you remove the internal lining that is supposed to be removable.

and

Once its removed whats the best method for cleaning it without it shrinking or becoming deformed.

Helmet is a shoei XR1000.

I never took the pads out of Liz's XR1000 I just washed it with them in situ

I dampened the inside of it with warm water and then used baby shampoo on the interior of it and massaged it in with my hands, then I used the shower to rinse it out with all the vents open. I did the same with my XR900 when I washed that.

It did take a couple of days to dry out properly though, but the colour of the water that came out of it was a bit grim.

Hmmm, sounds like a plan then. They are supposed to come out but fell like the will rip or damage something.

I can imagine the colour now, its not been done in the two years I have had the helmet and its getting a bit to gross now even for me lol

Will probably wait for the winter to bring a lengthy period of crap weather before taking my helmet out of use for abit though, supposed to be nice again this weekend and next week.

I know the cheek pads are on poppers. I'm not certain the rest of teh lining can be removed.

I recently removed the cheek pads and stuck them in with the washing. I found it a real sod to get the poppers back in though. On the plus side my lid smells alot fresher

The lining in my XR1000 is NOT removable, to try to do so would likely tear it.

The cheekpads are though. I remove the cheek pads and shampoo them and the entire helmet on a Friday night giving it the weekend to dry in the airing cupboard, ready for Monday morning. I get the whole things soaking wet, scrub with shampoo and then rinse thoroughly. It is a PITA to do too often so I'll be getting a lid with a removeable lining next time.

I have cleaned mine several times, in the bath, usung a shower head.

dob a load of shampoo in there, lather, and rinse! Become horrified at the amound of black water / grit coming out.

to dry I put mine up against a fan to flow some air thru, will dry overnight in this manner.

never had any problems with lining deforming, other than it smells fresh and feels snugger.

As has been said, XR-1000 lining does not seem to be removable - it felt like it would tear on mine, I poked about with it for a while to be sure...

Warm bathwater, cheek pads off, can do it with the shower head too which is good (fill the bath at the same time), MASSES of shampoo, foam the whole thing up good and proper, keep going for a while, then squeeze out as much water as you can (squishing the lining against the inside to get the water out, cheek pads much easier).

Then put out to dry for 1-2 days and then see how clean it smells when you wear it! Oh yes!

No it's not removeable G my good man. Just the cheek pads. Should come out and go back no problem.

I've been told baby shampoo's good for the job.

I washed it with minty hair shampoo......was gross smells lovely now ming......Is a helmet something you can put in a boiler/airing cupboard or would the heat cause it to dry out funny and go brittle?
