Hi...I picked up an R6 throttle tube + Grip yesterday from fowlers after reading a recent thread...
part number i bought is 5SL-26240-01... I have heated grips on ATM and want to keep these so only need the R6 Throttle Tube not the grip....how do I remove the grip? dont seem to be able to do it by simply pulling / pushing ... should i be using some sort of lube / wd40 / penetrating fluid / washing up liquid etc so it slips off?? would this work?... and... not tackled the grip on bike yet...this may have been stuck on (glued perhaps?)..if it has... is there a way to remove the grip from the existing tube without damaging it so that i can keep the heated grips?? any advice welcome Thanks in advance.... ![]() Dappa D |

WD40 will do the job, you need to spray it right down underneath the grip.

I use brake cleaner and a very thin screwdriver to work around between the grip and the bar/throttle tube. Slide the screwdriver gently between tube and grip and then squirt brake cleaner up each side of the driver and wiggle it around the bar. Every now and then add another squirt of brake cleaner to attack whatever glue there is. As you wiggle the driver round you pull the grip off the tube and eventually it just slides off.

When I glue heated grips on I use Araldite. Normal grip glues break down under the heat of the grips - Araldite doesn't but it's a bit permanent. Little tip, turn the heated grips on before you try to remove them as it softens the glue. |

I use silicone to stick grips down . Makes it easier to remove them afterwards , with the obligatory skinny screwdriver

my bike guy has just called....(he works from home)...
hes fitted my roadsmarts and new clutch cable, but said he couldnt put the R6 throttle tube on without causing damage to the existing heated grip....(i asked for the advice on here to pass onto him to sort of help him on his way...as he was only charging a fiver to do the clutch cable and throttle tube...) so ive asked him to leave it for now and will try and do it myself with the ways suggested here, thanks guys |

Take the old tube off with the grip attached and carefully slice a slot along the length of it inside with a hacksaw blade. That will make removal of the grip much easier

It could just be that he's come across the plastic ribs on the R6 grip- these need to be cut off before you can fit the heated grips.
PS, when removing old grips, you want compressed air, just float them off. Even an aerosol "air duster" is enough to do this if the ends of the grips are sealed. This works for fitting too.
