Default Anybody good at computer? Sound on my PC :(

My desktop PC was kindly donated to me and my girlfriend.

Since we have had it we have never been able to get sound from it, the previous owner supplied it to us with speakers etc which did work as we used to use the computer at their house....but now nothing, I dont think it is the speakers as when you plug headphones into any of the sockets on the computer they dont work either.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be as I have been bought an Ipod for my Xmas and its fairly useless if I'm unable to get sound on my PC.

Many thanks

The only thing I can think of is that the sound card has been removed and put in their new machine as her brother builds them. Is there a way to check this as I'm lost and slightly gutted.

Presumeably there are 3 sockets on the back. Mic, Speaker and line out I think. New machines have them colour coded . The speaker one is a light green colour. Some CD roms have a speaker socket on the front which wont work for pc noises. Otherwise check to see you have windows drivers installed

First port of call, on the desktop, select the my computer icon, "right" mouse click, select "properties", select the "hardware" tab, click the "device manager" button,

Double click the "sound, video and game controllers" tag.

this will show you what is fitted and what drivers you have, double click each to find the statue.

Cheers Mark.

Done that, the survey says.......

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
MPU-401 Compatible Midi Device
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs

No idea what they are.

Edit - I also have

Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
Unimodem half-duplex audio device

sounds like you do not have the drivers installed.

another thing is that the previous owner may have kept the sound card...

but most m/b's have on board sound, this may have been turned off in the BIOS because of a different PCI sound card..

depending on how old the m/b is it might be easier to just get another cheep PCI sound card and install that... most onboard sound cards sound cr@p anyway...

have a look at this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/98938

or try ebay...

double click the Vinylac'97 codec combo driver, go threw the tabs and make sure it says "device working properly" if not trawl the net for the correct one and reinstall.

if the sound ports are on the motherboard but not active, reboot the computer, it'll tell you which but normally it's either "del" or "F12" to enter bios and re-activate.

Cheers Mark.

Hurrah, this worked, device was not working properly.
