Default Yet Another 33bhp Restrictor Thread.

The Missus has just bought herself a curvy () but she's on a restricted license. I bought a set of 2nd hand Suzuki restrictors off ebay a while ago (just looks like a couple of carb washers with extentions on them?).

I've just spoken to a dealership and they reckon that there needs to be a certificate with them, in her name - the cost of which is £150, and comes with the two washers.

I was under the impression that I could just get the bike restricted and that was that? Anyone able to shed any light on this?

Cheers 'Org!

They will tell you that to make a nice bit of cash on the side. The requirements and certification of the 33bhp licence is still a huge grey area. You don't necessarily need a certificate to say it's 33bhp or less, you just need some form of 'proof' (very loose term). This can be a dyno print-out, a signed certificate from your dealer etc.
To be quite honest, you could knock a certificate up in photoshop that looks professional, sign it yourself and no-one would know any different. Not that I condone that of course!

Edit: Yeah I kind of contradicted myself there. It's early.

+1 they know f**k all.

Your bike has to be 33bhp. If you ever get pulled for it give your keys to plod tell them to dyno it and then buy you a new set of tyres because the dyno f**ked them up.

Exactly the answer I was hoping for, and put in the finest possible way! I'll just get the local garage to fit it and ask them to mention the restriction on the receipt. Job's a good un.

Cheers Folks!

They'll probably try to sell you an FI international kit too. What kit have you got? Is it a pair of washers or sliders or what?

The two washers are not the official Suzuki 33bhp kit, they are the FI International kit.

As for the certificate, it is of no use to the police, some insurance companies request a copy, but the courts will require a copy if you end up standing in front of them. Not sure exactly why some require and others don't, seems to be some legal confusion into the relevance of these certificates.

Should just make a blank FI international one so people can just print their own out.

Anyone got one and some photoshop skillz?

The courts will not "require" the certificate, you are not even "required" to have proof. If the police suspect that the bike is putting out more power then it is up to them to prove it. To avoid unnecessary hassle though, a dyno print out would be sufficient proof to them in 99% of cases (and the other 1% they will have the bike dyno'ed).

FI international will argue until they're blue in the face that you "need" the certificate, but it is simply not true. The law states the bike must have less power than 25kW (33bhp). That is all.

Dave you're on about a court case with a guy who was caught doing well over the ton... I doubt any certificate would have seen him get away with that one.

I can't remember from the last time this came up, but do you know of any more examples?
