I have a 2000 SV650 the curvy model, the speedo stopped working randomly the other day, lights still work on it and the rev counter is fine just doesn't show speed or count the mileage. What should I check/replace? Is it a wire or cable to the speedo? Haven't had a chance to look at it as everytime I come in it has been dark.
Cheers, Matt |

Even if the wheel hasn't recently been removed, the first thing to check is the rotor in the front wheel - they have been known to break.
Take the wheel off and see if the rotor's drive lugs are still intact.

+1 it happened to me recently. when I took the front wheel out to investigate there was a lot of debris where the speedo drive rotor lugs used to be.

Ah ok, hmm any tips on getting the front wheel off without a front paddock stand?

Hydraulic car jack will do the job under the engine, make sure its on a flat area and maybe use something to protect the engine casing, and to be sure, have someone there to hold it up just incase. Use a rear paddock stand too if you can.

I've seen people prop their bike up on all sorts of wobbly rubbish - but I'd be wary of doing so myself. Do you have a garage? If yes then perhaps you could suspend it from the roof as some people do - this is a good option if you've got some sturdy tie downs or perhaps even some suitably strong rope.

I don't have a car jack but I am not sure do cars have them in the boot?
![]() I don't have a garage that I could hang it from the roof of either, I do have the stands though. |

yup - most cars will have some kind of jack in with the spare wheel. this under the engine block with a paddock stand works ok but its not that stable - much better with an abba stand or something like that.
don't put the jack under the oil filter though... |

I haven't looked, is there a gap under the fairings on the fully faired version or am I going to have to take the fairings off?
