Default Astravan alternator

2002, TDi common rail

Anyone know much about these? Not charging, same voltage as battery at the terminal on the front of the alternator. (so no broken cable)

What's the small plug on the front of the alternator for? Is it some sort of feedback for the charging system or something else? (heard rev counter mentioned online somewhere, but on an earlier model)

What are they like to change? Do you need to get under it, or can you manage it with swearing a lot from the top? Any special tools required for accessory belt tensioner etc?

Check slip-ring brushes if possible, isn't always. If no output at all suspect duff regulator and/or rectifier if no swapover slippys. Unless they're spectacularly expensive exchange don't faff with it other than checking the obvious external areas. Most modern alternators are easy enough - two fixed mounts and a slotted for belt tension, from memory access on Ashtrays not difficult.

Car alternators usually have two connections; fat red for output, thin other one is for charge warning, Derv Donkey alternators sometimes have a third for 'leccy tacho drive - no ignition system to drive tacho*.

*Yes, I know you know this.

Derv donkey Hehe.

It is the one with the vacuum pump on the back, with a couple of vacuum lines and one oil line with a banjo fitting. Any idea why a vacuum pump would need this?

vacuum pump needed for servo assisted brakes as no usable inlet vacuum. As fed off alternator, it is constantly rotating and under load, hence need for an oil feed or it would knacker very quickly
