Default Setting up a wired+wireless network.....

Hi all,

Hopefully someone out there can help me with my problem, its probably something dead easy that I've missed out.

What I want to be able to do is connect my PC to my laptop for the purpose of browsing the internet but mainly to perform remote installs and troubleshoot remotely (MCDST course).

I've purchased and installed a
wireless router/modem - belkin
pci network card for my pc - belkin
a wireless usb adaptor for my laptop - belkin

I have ran the software provided on the pc to set up the router and also ran the software for the wireless on my laptop. Both my PC and laptop can access the internet through my router.

The problem I am having is seeing my pc from my laptop and vice versa.

I a running xp pro on both machines, and have spent hours sprawling through the internet to find someone who is trying to set up a wired to wireless network but cant find anything. I have tried using network wizard on both machines but no joy. They are both named MSHOME on the 'workgroup' but they just dont see each other.

Can anyone throw any suggestions my way?

Cheers in advance

Some ADSL modem/routers (esp LinkSys) have the ability to group clients by connection type, then apply rules.

It could be that the two groups (wired LAN and Wifi) aren't allowed to talk to each other by the router. Sack the setup CD's for the router & use the web interface.

Cheers Baph,

I've checked the router options using the web interface and there doesnt seem any options to 'group' by connection type. As far as I can see the router is set up and doing its job as to internet access for both machines. I just hope its not as you say with the 2 groups not allowed to talk to each other as I did say this is what I wanted it for to the tech guy in PC World. I dont really want to go wirelesss on my pc as well, I prefer the stability and speedI get using the cable on my main pc. Oh well, another day bashing my head!

What's the model number on the modem/router? (Should say on the underneath of it if you're not sure from packaging/manuals)

I'll take a gander over the documentation once I know the model number.

Whilst I'm getting the manual & having a look through them, do me a small favour....

What the IP address of each machine? Is the subnet (usually 255.255.255.0) the same on each?

In fact, a screenshot of "ipconfig /all" from both machines would be helpful.

or of course just ping the gateway and other device from the command line

The OP says that both machines can access the internet, so gateway connectivity isn't the issue.

A ping from one machine to the other may not be possible, if the DHCP server gives out differing IPs for wired/wifi and the subnet is prohibitive.

Do nae worry, I'm getting to there Mark. I'm also thinking the same as you - that the problem is File Sharing/NetBIOS grouping, but I like to start at the start.

PMs received, and in order to keep everyone else in the loop, both machines IP addresses are 192.168.2.x, and subnet is as expected (255.255.255.0).

Next step, disable the firewall on both machines (not router), and if you're running either Symantec or Norton security software, disable them & reboot.

Then test again.

How are you trying to connect to them? Simply viewing them in Network Neighbourhood? Or via \\computername\share ?
