I've done it in the past. Not as a job or anything. Very theraputic. Get a bit of wax on there and you can get some awesome results.

yes, but again, not professionally,

The right tools, and time is what gets results. is it a manual lathe or a powered one?

As you know being a fellow wood chippa, sharp chisels are essential, always allow as much time for finishin as you do turning.
Work you way up the sandpapers, finishing up with at least 600 grit.
Oak turnings can splinter when roughing so allow more for sanding.
Btw done a bit at college, mostly baseball bats lol, done a few bowls etc and gave them to family, i aint no expert though.

Had a go at a friends , he has a Lathe in his workshop at the back of his house . He rang me up to help him assemble the Lathe so I toddled off over there expecting some sort of "Meccano" type affair ..................... bugger me Pink , it may as well have been a Metal Turning Lathe for all intents and purposes . They had not sent him an adaptor to attach his Chuck to the head of the Lathe and he didn`t know which one it was and neither did the shop who supplied him . I managed to work out what one it was from the pitch of the thread and the diameter etc and they sent him one . He phoned me up and invited me over when it arrived ....... it was all set up and he knows I can machine metal to high standards , but showed me how to turn wood . I was shaking like a leaf , I kept having images of the chisel snatching and being flung into my chest . I got over that sensation and really enjoyed it . He then opened his supply of wood and showed me some of the bits he had bought online and explained how he had to leave them to "Season" etc and then grabbed a bit of Walnut and proceeded to turn it into a bowl . A few brews later , and me standing there in admiration , he handed me the final and polished article and gave it to me as a present for helping him , it feels a bit special as it was the first item to be turned and finalised on that lathe and I helped to assemble it .

Always wanted to, still trying to figure out where to put one. I'd love to try making those delicate wooden bowls, wafer thin.

Oh yeah,

Gizza go mister!

Like badger I can do metal turning. I had a short go a few years a go at manual wood turning but wasn't allowed to spend long at it (school, the lathe only got turned on once in a blue moon). I wouldn't mind one in the shed to play around with, along with many other things
