Ok
You remove the spark plug, put it's cap and rest the end against something earthed (metal) then press the ignition switch.
Or that's how I do it anyhow...

Take the plug lead off first and hold it in your hand, then turn on the ignition and crank the engine over on the starter. If you get a massive electric shock (several thousand volts) then you know the coil is working. A safer way is to get a mate to hold the plug lead instead so he gets the shock, but if you've run out of mates then as Dave says take the plug out of the engine, put the lead back on it and wedge the plug up against the engine somewhere making sure the thread part is against the engine and you can see the sparky bit (that's the bit normally inside the engine). Then crank the engine over on the starter motor and look for a spark. It's best done with all the plugs out at the same time as the engine can turn over quicker, but just be sure to mark all the plug leads first so when you go to put them back you put the right lead on the right plug....

ps: I am joking about the holding the lead in your hand - it will hurt and you'd probably only do it once, which is no use as there are four plugs on a VFR.
