Default Is this new?

I got stopped on my way to buy road tax in my daughters car a few weeks ago and got a £60. Yesterday I get a letter from DVLA fining me £46. My daughter also got a letter saying she had to declare she is keeper of vehicle or face £1000 fine. So Im now skint £125 for tax and £106 in fines. Learnt my lesson

Car is not allowed on the road without road tax unless driving to a pre-booked MOT. I don't understand the DVLA threat - who is the registered keeper just now, the previous owner?

No you have never been allowed to drive without tax, dunno about the fine but the DVLA are a bunch of front bottoms, they sent my mate a very threatening letter for "not taxing" his GPZ, despite it passing under the control of an insurance company as it was written off.

Fair enough mistakes happen but the tone of the letters would get their noses bitten off if they spoke like that in person. And I'd laugh.

Oww Hazel that's rubbish news
As said, it's not new. Once it's sorned you can only buy tax by phone, internet or walking to a post office. It's just a booked MOT you can drive to or back home from if failed.

I don't understand the 2 different fines though
The Policeman that was a completes **** not letting you off to carry on to the Post Office though I can completely believe

yeah coz the cop will never had heard "I'm on my way to the post office now" might have gotten away with it if only a few days out but not months. Could hav been worse, could have done for no insurance either.

The DVLA fine may well be the amount due for the months it was not taxed

I suspect the £60 was a fixed penalty notice for driving a car without valid VED (Road Tax)

The £46 from the DVLA is likely to be the cost of the tax you would have paid between the date it was last taxed and the date of the offence

Regarding the registered keeper, if it's her car and she keeps it at her house she should be the RK, if it stays at your house but she uses it there's merit in you being the RK, if she lives at your house and the car is kept there she definitely should be the RK - bearing in mind the RK is not the same as the owner. Best bet would be to phone the DVLA and ask what's most suitable for your circumstances...

It's a PITA, but it's the law, and ignorance provides no defence

Treat it as an expensive lesson and get on with life

Depends if you're telling the truth or not.

No tax does not invalidate insurance unlike no MOT.
