Default odd charge patterns

my bike is not charging properly and im sh!te with electrics

I've had this problem for a while, i remember it happening back as far as june last year, the battery isn't charging at what it should be occasionally. it will start run with lights ect no problems but the voltage in the battery is to low to run the heated grips and lights at the same time so heated grips say no and switch off but this is not always the case some days it will run fine with everything switched on. It was summer i never used the heated grips so i put it down to being a duff battery and ignored it as the bike runs fine. Anyway battery finally killed its self off last month so i bought a new one charged it and put it under the stairs for a week whilst i finished the bike off. It held its charge fine so i know that's not a problem............... anyway first time properly using the bike under load on sat and i noticed this problem had all started again on the way to the MOT

Gone out to the bike this evening to start it and the start sounded off, shut it off and started again still sounded off so tried again and battery was dead. After checking the voltage i was getting 12.9 - 13.04 at 2500-3000 RPM which isn't right, like i said im crap with electrics but im thinking 3 things......

1. reg/rec on its way out slowly
2. something fubar with the generator
3. a dodgy connection somewhere resulting in full charge rate sometimes and not in other times

its not a major problem as there is still enough juice to start the bike but its still odd, ideas?

Would you not be able to borrow someones reg/rec and then test that to see if it improves?

Sounds like it is the reg/rec...

I would measure the output to the battery and the input to the reg/rec. Once you know these figures you know if there is an issue. I'll give an example in a strange way. I have an 09 fireblade reg/rec on my bike and at all revs (importantly at ilde an 5k) it read 14.5v, now with the lights on as well, i like to run it the bike with them on, it reads 14.1. Keeping in mind the latter reg/recs should power a bike with lights on after the eu law, a feed of 14.1 is great because it gives me the option of grips, power socket etc. The older sv reg/rec even at its best will struggle with the output. Basically get some readings and post them and lets see what we have.
