Petrol cap smells of petrol? - SV650.org

Bit of a daft question i think but here goes. With my petrol cap closed and locked should i be able to smell petrol at said cap?

It better be normal just had a sniff and yes I could smell the faint woft of gasoline

Cheers tommo, i know it sounds like an odd question but ive just spent the last few days re-building my carbs because of fuel leak and hydrolocked front cylinder and im paranoid about losing any more expensive fuel

With a suitable bit of hose blow down the little hole next to the filler, if you can hear it in the tank the filler well drain pipe is rusted out.

Do a search, sadly it's happened to a few bikes.

Don't think the cap itself is air/fuel tight!
Lifted my tank on the prop & surprised to find fuel dribbling down it. ( tank was almost full )
On Sid Squid's suggestion: try putting some WD40 down it & see whether it comes out the bottom - if not, you've got problems, water will get into tank & speed the rusting process.
