No, not my bike was stolen. A colleague's white ex-police BMW was
stolen at 5:21pm on Tuesday from the pavement on Gordon Street, where all UCL bikers park their bikes. CCTV captured the theft but police are not keen on pursuing an investigation. It is low priority for them. It all happened in broad daylight, with the street full of pedestrians and cars. Took 3 minutes for two guys to remove the ignition barrel and ride off. Don't know why they chose this particular bike. It is 6 years old and has 40K on the clock. My colleague had it for about a month only. My bike wasn't parked at UCL that day because I was working from home. It is worrying that thieves can get away with this in broad daylight in Central London. |

My colleague has just come into my office and asked the following
questions. a) He has paid his insurance premium for the full year (in advance) but had the bike for 2 weeks only. Will he get any part of the insurance premium back? b) He has paid his road tax for the full year (in advance). Is it possible to get anything back from the DVLA? BTW, the number plate is HN54VTU. |

Insurance - if there is a claim, entire premium is due, so no refund (can't cancel if you make a claim). But hopefully he will be paid for the bike, that's what the insurance is for - can't expect to not pay for it and still get a pay out.
Road tax, dunno, sorry. Seems likely that refund may be possible on that one. |

Hi Dimitri, hope all is well with you and Marina.
Sorry to hear about this. to answer your first quesiton, my overactive imaginiation suggests it might have been stolen to order, to be tarted back up and used to impersonate a police vehicle. secondly, he'd need to look at the terms and coniditons of the policy, but if he paid it, it ought to pay out thirdly, the last time I had a bike stolen, DVLA refunded the tax on a pro-rata basis, on production of the police report of the theft. hth. |

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.
Good news for you, Alexey, on the road tax! Every little bit helps. Was good to hear from you, Debs. Marina and I are OK. Alexey, I suggest you join this website. Who knows, maybe your next bike will be a Suzuki. But, seriously, one doesn't have to own a Suzuki to be a member. The idea that this particular bike may be used as a fake police bike in some high profile crime is original. I guess we will learn soon enough whether this is the case. |
