Default Non runner assistance please - Bedford.

Hi all,

is there anyone in the Bedford area who can help get my bike back up to scratch. Money, work and relocation issues meant that my 1999 SV650 s import hasn't been ridden much over the last couple of years. In the last 12 months I have paid out for a new relay and ignition and have just had the carbs stripped and cleaned. I have also just fitted a new battery as I am looking to use the bike more now. However, the exhaust is popping like mad and I am often losing power at 80mph plus. I have been told that it is probably something simple like a split in a hose causing an incorrect gas/air mixture, or may be that a diaphragm is clogged up with jellified petrol (apparently only the imports have this diaphragm).

Is there anybody out there who fixes bikes as a hobby who reckons they can sort this for some extra cash? I cannot afford the money or the time to get it back into a garage at the mo, especially as it is still roadworthy.

I may also be looking to sell it for the right price.

Cheers

Crunchy

I'm too far awya I'm afraid but if you mean yours has the PAIR emission system, just junk this as it's probably causing the problems. If the carbs have been cleaned then you can forget any problems with old fuel. Check the exhaust for leaks esp round the engine (looks for sooty marks and feel for gas escaping - be careful, it gets very hot). I think the PAIR system lets some air into the exhaust as well so it's worth getting rid of it as you don't need it in the UK.

There's a couple of things you can easily check for general poor running.
1. Lift the tank and make sure the piece of foam under it is securely fixed and can't be pulled down.
2. Check the rubbers between the airbox and carb are seated properly and not split (take the airbox off for this). You can also make sure all the hoses are properly reconnected when you put it back.
3. While you're at it, make sure the choke cable mechanism isn't stuck
4. When you put the tank back down make sure the short hose that connects to the rear of the tank isn't kinked.

Have you checked/changed the spark plugs recently? If not, it would be worthwhile.

How has the bike been stored? If left out in the rain you could have some other common issues.

Are the misfires all the time or just in certain conditions?

I'm sure that's right.

Although my imported curvy has a long pipe connected to the hole in the airbox that is blanked off on the UK models. That long pipe has also been blanked off but it was presumably connected to something that has since been removed.

Dunno TBH but in the manual for the curvy there's a section on emissions stuff, I haven't opened it though!
