Default blue smoke

okay people, pointy me in the right direction. on way home from work heard a bit of a clunk and thought oh oh. pulled over, engine seems fine, ticking over nicely, nothing out of the ordinary, then i notice a hint of blue smoke and my heart sank. revved it a little and a plume bellowed out.
i was planning on a trade-in, but thats now in doubt.

Blue smoke is never good.

Best case scenario is the oil is coming from the engine breather back into the air box, but that's unliklely.

Something in the top end isn't happy. Stripdown is probably the term going to be used.

Sadly the above advice is probably true. I'd do a compression test first, it could possibly save unnecessary work.

carried out a compression test sid squid, as you advised, and discovered both pots were 115psi and 120psi. dropped a little oil in each chamber and got 220psi and 225psi so its the pistons and barrells etc.
decided to scrap bike which has broken my heart but will use it as an excuse to invest in something with a little more kick.
thanks again people for your thoughts.

What is the compression range for a good engine? They seem pretty high for a scrapper.

The difference there suggests somethings f*ed.

However, used pistons and barrels are cheap... lots of engines blown their big ends and left rest of it unscathed. Easy fix
