Default Maxxis tyres bought.

So the pair of Avon Storm Ultras I've had on the SV for the last 5000 and a bit miles are coming to the end of their lives. There is still a bit of tread on them but the rear is almost on the wear marks and the front has now developed a distinctly triangular shape. They're not fun to ride on any more as they have a tendancy to track the irregularities in the road surface. The shape of the front also now encourages the bike to suddenly tuck into corners once the bike is past a certain angle of lean.

Now much as I like these tyres - and they have been excellent in both the wet and the dry - I really can't afford the £200+ to buy and have another pair of them fitted so I've decided to give the Maxxis 6029 tyres a go. I've spent a couple of days trawling the internet and looking at reviews and on the whole they've been pretty favourable. There has been a certain amount of tyre snobbery from one or two quarters as you'd expect but this has been pretty easy to see through.

So I've just bought a pair from DKOnline for the sum of £122.44 delivered. I can add 20 quid onto that for fitting, balancing and tyre disposal to bring the total cost up to just short of £145. That seems like a reasonable deal on the face of it. How reasonable will depend on how well the tyres perform. Once the tyres arrive and have been fitted I'll give a bit of a review of them in the hardware review section..

I fitted Maxxis Sports about 3k miles ago (DK £130 delivered + £25 to fit etc). I really rate them (esp for the money). I will be buying them again. Run them at 36F, 42R...

Some have commented that the rear feels loose around corners. The only time I have experienced this type of sensation (oooeeerrr) is when the tyres were cold and I was in a rush.

Comparing them to the BT-021's they replaced - I think they are better in the dry (I have smaller strips on the Maxxis, under 5mm on the rear) and equal in the wet.

Longevity may be the telling factor as I got about 7k out of my Bridgstones.

I'll be interested to see what you think.

waow you must not have a straight road wherever you go if you've got the front in a triangle shape and not squaring it off...

shall look forward to the review of them

It's the touring versions I'm going to fit Rich, more use to me than a sports tyre tbh, because of the distance and type of riding I do. I shall be interested to see how they stand up to a spot of scratching round the lanes though.....

A chap at work has them on his 1250 Bandit and rates them pretty highly.

That's encouraging, if they work on a big as big and grunty as a 1250 Bandit they shouldn't have too hard a time on the SV. Mind you I guess part of it is going to come down to how the bike is ridden.
