Bikers pay tribute to funnyman president

A VINTAGE motorcycle club in Ringwood, which has raised thousands for charity, has paid tribute to their president Sir Norman Wisdom who has died aged 95.
The club now plans to donate the last £900 from its kitty to Age Concern, which was close to Norman’s heart.
The veteran showman became president of Ringwood Riders vintage motorbike club after its members visited the Isle of Man, for the TT races, where Norman lived.
Chairman Roy Jeanes said: “We had the pleasure of meeting Norman in 1995 at the TTs, he was watching the racing at Black Dub on the circuit.
“We started chatting with him and we had an enjoyable afternoon with him and his PA Anne Marie. When we got back to Ringwood, we sent him a Ringwood Riders embroidered T-shirt.
“We decided to ask him if he would be our president, as we thought his name would help us in our charity work. We had a letter back within days saying that he would be delighted.”
Ringwood Riders met Norman Wisdom at the TT races for the second time in 1997. The comedian offered the club a surprise invitation of a tour of his home in Andreas in the north of the Isle of Man.
Roy said: “We had a tour conducted by a very proud and very happy man, the courtesy and politeness he showed us was wonderful.
“He had a baby grand piano in the room and we asked him if he would play us a tune. He did and did his stumble as he walked over to the instrument.
“He was brilliant. He lit up the whole room. He was as you saw in his films, larking around. He showed us his motorbikes. We all have nicknames and we called him Stormin’ Norman.”
Roy added: “We understand that Norman was president of Age Concern on the Isle of Man so as a tribute to a very special human being, our club decided to donate to his favourite charity.
“We are and still are very proud to have been associated with Norman and we will treasure the photographs we have of him.”
The club donated the comedian a Ringwood Riders jacket with his nickname on it, which Roy said Norman cherished.
Ringwood Riders made their first donation of £500 in 1997 for the Stable Home Family Trust.
