Default Little greenlaning project

I picked up my winter project from my brother yesterday his old Yam DT125

I say old, its only done 3,700 miles! Its an '89 model and hasnt moved since about '92, keys were last seen circa 1995

1st things 1st i've applied for a V5 form and tomorrow i'll start looking for a new ignition barrel and filler cap with keys. think i'll end up with 2 different keys for ignition and filling up but ah well. Will I FUBAR the tank if I drill out the existing cap?

Then i'll start stripping it down. Lets see whats survived 18 years of neglect

Looking past the yellow leg warmers on the forks, I couldnt believe the condition when I 1st saw it. hardly any marks on the plastics, zero signs of rust and its quite clean too! Little air in the tyres and a squirt of brake cleaner on the pads and she rolled on the trailer like a good un

I learned to ride on a KE100 when I was 9 and got a brand new KX250 off my dad in '97 so I've always had a soft spot for 2 stroke crossers

Nothing, nowt, nada, zip, bupkis mate it was my brothers bike for going to college on, hes coming up 40 soon! The place its been stored at all these years is being sold so I took it away for him cause i'm a nice guy like that

I'm thinking a fair bit! Apart from the obvious, things like the headstock bearings, fuel lines, all the gaskets will probably need replacing. Tyres will pretty much be certain to have perished but i'll give them a try 1st

I'm going to strip it and price everything up before I buy anything. So I know exactly what i'm letting myself in for!

Neh I won't be breaking it, this little babys taking me round wales and the lakes

Theres a salvage place down the road from me and theres always eBay. Parts for these should be dime a dozen. Im hoping! All I need is for the garage to be warmer than the 2° it is now and I can get started

Nice, it doesn't look like it'll need too much at all. If it's not going to be left parked anywhere secluded, I wouldn't worry too much about a lockable filler cap. Keep us up to date on progress.

Little update, left work early and commenced stripping (the bike ) so the DT now looks like this

Tank is on the bench ready to have the filler cap drilled out. I expect to lose at least 1/2 a finger in the process. I may end up sticking a chisel in the lock and hitting it with a big mallet not decided yet. The smell of 20yr old petrol is too

Lol @ the size of the battery and the brakes are hmmm furry. Pistons are well and truly stuck so will be getting introduced to my friend mr compressor. i'll see how far I can fire them across the yard

Popping into the salvage yard tomorrow to see if I can pick up a new ignition barrel without looking too much like a bike thief
