I have always liked the idea of getting a TL, just wondering what peoples oppinions on them are.
which one to get S or R? are they as troublesom as people make them out? i will also add this would be a bit of a side bike idea, i would get it for a bit of a prodject. it would not be my main bike, i would still keep the zzr1200 (or hopefully upgrade to the 14) and just have it to go for fun sunday blats. |

Make sure its got a steering damper & an upgraded rear shock. The rear OEM was based on a car design and the damper fluid got over cooked by the rear cylinder, which didn't help the handling.
The early ones were a bit wild because of this Otherwise sound engine and usual Suzuki issues, no grease on assembly

I own a Tl1000R, and I love it. You have the right idea with regard to having it as a project bike, there always seems to be something else that needs doing to mine! It's my only bike and there have been some niggles (rear shock needed to be junked, warped discs, an ecu packed up, pushrod seal went...), but I ride it very regularly and can honestly say that it's bad reputation is, for the most part, undeserved, especially after upgrading the shock. It got me to Nurburgring and back with no problems, and that journey was done with no motorway. Another trip abroad planned for this year.
Basically, in a nutshell, in my opinion, it's big and heavy by today's standards, but I haven't found much that compares with it for sheer fun. When all is going well, it's a very rewarding bike to ride. I went from SV650S to ZX7R to TL and don't regret it. They do tend to divide people though. But I'll tell you this much, there's not a lot I'd swap mine for. Good TL's are few and far between. |

Some people reckon they can be made to work with modifications. Who knows, maybe I'll have a go some day. I'd have a TL1000S, I'd replace the forks and damper though, probably leave the steering damper on but fill it with RSF2.5 to ease it off a bit. Brilliant grunty engine, sound ace, thirsty. Little bit heavy, but the one I tried had steering damper which are rock hard and stock suspension. I reckon they'd be much better with geometry tweaked a bit and be much sweeter. If you can get chassis spot on that engine will make it an absolute weapon.

But it's got a p p p pointy frame, and they are not same engine. SVthou definitely has the edge taken off it compared to TL.

also the sz has nice black frame to hide its uncruvyness |
