Considering today's cost of travel I am curious how much Mr Average spends on travelling to and fro financially but also the weekly amount of time.
Example----- 30 miles each way by car using 9lts fuel=£12:00 Journey time 45mins each way=1.5hours Weekly £84 and 7.5hrs @ 45times p.a.= £3780 and 337.5hrs Add another £200 for one service plus tyre wear Question being ----is your job worth the time and money after tax for the benefits or would it be more beneficial to work locally for a lesser salary but have more free time Purely hypothetical as I am aware the job market is very restricted |

My journey is a bus to the station, train to Liverpool Street, tube to Baker Street, bus to Lord's.
On the way home I get a lift from the station with Mr LPH when possible as the bus service is infrequent and unreliable. Bus to town - single £2.30 a day so around £500 a year Travel card for train, tube and London buses £4020 a year Taxi home from station late (buses stop at 8pm) approximately 4 times a month at £10 per trip £450 a year So that's £5k a year plus the costs of owning and running a car. And my commute is 2 hours each way. But there's only one Lord's Cricket Ground so I'm a bit limited on where I could work.

If i motorbike it to work (which i have done so for the last 6 months or so as i sold the cari had ) £18 - £19 of super unleaded does me and that`s for a 30 mile round trip.
When the weather is warmer i usually ride my push bike. As for 4 wheels i couldn`t say as i haven`t used it for work yet, I bought one about 4 weeks ago but never use it (only for Band stuff). Rgds |

Bike runs at 44-46mpg
Takes 20 minutes, about 16 miles. I still want a car though ![]() Ideally, a 1.4 tdi Lupo or Arosa, or even a Smart car is the obvious choice for cheap motoring with some comfort, but then yours spending £2-£3k for a decent model, and unless you got that money sitting around, its another monthly expenditure. For me, travelling 1 hour each way, at 52 miles per day total, into central London, was getting too much after 8 years. Financially worth it as the pay was MUCH higher, but was it worth my time and danger to life travelling into London, not really. If I went back to the city, i'd take the huge anal lubing costs of the HSTrain into London. 15 minutes to central london by train, instead of 1 hour by normal train, or 1 hour by motorcycle. |

About 1 pair of slippers per year, although last winter I bought some snow slippers for when I brought the milk in.
My commute has just got longer... now the good weather has arrived I've moved from my office next to the kitchen to the conservatory.

40 miles a day, 200 per week.
Car = 30mpg so About £40 per week. Bike = 50mpg so About £24 per week. I'm lucky as I get 22l per week fuel paid for by work which would cover my car use if not for good driving roads and a heavy right foot. |

I drive 150 mile round trip each day = 750 miles each week.
I use approx 55 ltrs of diesel a week = Around £78 each week. Journey times 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.75 hours to get home. 3.25 hours a day = Approx 16 hours of commuting a week. 34500 miles for the year £3588 at current fuel prices £250 servicing costs £200 tyres £200 other comuting related costs. 736 hours of driving So well over £4k a year spent just to get to work. A month of my life a year spent just getting to work and back. Basically I would be prepared to drop around £6k of my salary for a job which was in the same town as I lived. I would save two thirds on my commute costs and the other third I would exchange for better quality of life. Last edited by Stig; 24-03-11 at 11:58 AM. |

8 miles each way so 16 miles a day.
16x5=80 per week. Per year is 4160 miles. Take off the off days (A/l, bank holidays, work from home etc) 3360 miles per year. I cycle normally about a week out of a month. (Hopefully going to be more soon). On the motorbikes I sometimes take a longer route (16 miles each way) for the fun of it which obviously increases costs. I'm lucky in that my car will do 55-60mpg easily on my drive, and it's only 20 minutes away with no traffic. |
