Improving Acceleration - Front or Back Sprocket?

Suppose I wanted to improve acceleration on my curvy - is there a preference to going down a tooth on the front, or up 1-2 teeth on the back?

Also, is putting on a new sprocket on old (they are still in good nick) chain and sprocket that bad? I know the "best practises" but was wondering if that reflected in real life.

standard ratios are Naked - 15T front, 45T rear/ SVS - 15T front, 44T rear, so getting a 45 rear sprocket makes it a naked setup, you'll drop a minimal amount of topend but hardly notice it, if you wanted more I'd go up 3 teeth on the rear but that would probably need a longer chain, the cheaper way is to drop the front to 14, but this does increase chain wear and correspondingly cut chain life.

Any part of the final drive chain being old will reduce the life of any new components, but as long as you are aware of that and check the front sprocket for wear you shouldn't be caught out.

Hmm. Who was it that said I shouldnt lose any top end at all, because the SVS doesnt top out the revs in 6th?

I might just drop the front to 14 based on what you are saying though, as I dont want to buy a new chain. I have checked the final drive components and from what I can make of it, it all looks reasonable. Chain is well lubed regularly, only just had to adjust it after the GM since you last did it with me! Sprockets aren't hooked or anything.

Any preferable brands?

Dunno who said it, but they were correct. I went up 2 teeth on mine and it still topped out about 135mph indicated, but at slightly higher revs. The mod is worth doing IMO, certainly makes the bike more sprightly, but makes it rev higher on the motorway.

How far off is -1T Front to +2 Rear?

you can always do 15/47 and it'll have a similar effect

Interesting thread this as I used to have a naked and now have a faired and did notice a difference in the acceleration between the two. The naked just felt a little bit more spritely, as Ralph put it.

After reading this I'm now thinking of putting a bigger rear sprocket onto my SVS to get more acceleration out of it so it feels more like my old naked, but want to do it on the cheap without replacing the chain. Does anyone have experience of whether I can go upto a 45T or 46T without replacing the chain?
