Default Brake pad wear indicators

My rear pads appear to be this sort...

So how do you tell when it's time to replace them if they don't have the slices going through them?

Just look at how much material is left on the pad, there will be a recommended minimum thickness for your pad and replace before it reaches it! You should be able to see the material with the pad still in place!
