Sprokets- Do these look worn out?
Do these Sprockets look worn out?
I was expecting them to be a lot worse. The sprockets have done between 13 and 17k (They look like OEM fitment)

Nope, the sprocket teeth tend to go into a hook shape when worn

Re: Sprokets- Do these look worn out?
I kept a front sprocket from my 250 that ended up with about three teeth left on it after I eeked the chain life out a smidge too far... Was a poor student and stupid in those days though. Compared to that yours are fine!

Re: Sprokets- Do these look worn out?
OE sprockets are always excellent quality, I always fit one and a pattern rear with a good quality chain, that way you get the best life from the set.
Worn sprockets duff chains in no time - and the front wraps the most chain, so needs the best wear resistance.

Re: Sprokets- Do these look worn out?
Looks like you got the same set as I chose to replace your worn ones. My front sprocket had shark fins for teeth when I changed it, but then I had a couple of seized rollers that chewed the drivechain to bits for the last couple of weeks.
If you measured yours fine enough, you would probably find that the front sprocket has been worn enough to prevent a good engagement with the chain, this slowly gets worse and makes the wear worse with time due to not spreading load through out the chain. You would think that this antiquated system would have been replaced by something much more reliable by now, but chains and sprockets are just so good at what they do. Your nest step, get yourself a chain oiler and keep that new front sprocket alive even longer. |

How many miles do chain and sprockets generally last?

How long is a piece of string?
Depends, I once had a customer who had a VFR800 and he had never replaced his sprockets but had replaced his chain a couple of times, think the bike had 30k on it Last edited by Holdup; 02-03-12 at 06:13 PM. |
