Default MOT Failure

SV650 - K3

My bike has just failed it's mot on the front brake. The front (floating disc) has been iffy for a few weeks so i knew something was up. I have been quoted over £600 by my dealer fix it but am told i need a new caliper disc, pad and all the sundries. Apparently the caliper is pulling too much on one side so even if only the disc was replaced it would happen again and even with a new disc it is an mot failure.
Can anyone recommend a dealer/garage in the Nottingham area that i might try.

£600 is taking the micky. Go somewhere else. I'll do it for less.

The caliper probably just needs a strip and service, worst case new caliper piston seals. Is the disc damaged or below minimum thickness? Did they provide a reason why the disc needs replacing?

Overhaul at the worst. Or a clean up, maybe new pads, maybe a bleed and grease. Could be simple as. Plenty of help on here. Ive done a k3 overhaul on the brakes. Flymos right, 600 is taking the proverbial.

Brake disc is loose but other than that it looks OK, guy said strip down and re build would cost roughly same as its labour intensive and could not guarentee it working. How much are floating disc buttons? Could be cheaper then new disc.

I've just had a full brake overhaul on the K2. Callipers stripped out and refurbed and new pads and seals on both front & rear, which included freeing bolts so corroded that they had to soak the rear in industrial solvent at another company up the road overnight before they could get it all apart. I got (not much) change out of 300 quid. 600 quid seems, let's be kind, daylight feckin robbery.

LABOUR INTENSIVE.......bullplop, even I know how to strip and clean calipers (and dry them in ovens )

I just choose somebody like YC to do them for me coz I don't have time!

Could buy another SV for that kinda money, a pretty knarly one, but a whole one none the less!

+1 on the "get YC to do it" option, plus if he thinks its bad (unlikely of course) remind him of mine, I might just hold a personal best for amount of faffing required to get brakes working satisfactorily again

If you remove the disc from the bike, find yourself two suitable sized ball shaped objects. Even the ball end of a couple of brake levers would do, place one underneath on a block of wood, then the disc button, then another on top. Give it a decent whack with a hammer and it will spread the button slightly. Just enough to take up play usually. Repeat on the other buttons and it should be as good as new.

Failing that I have a pair of discs you can have for £95 posted.

Apparently even with a new disc it would not pass mot as caliper

still be sticking on one side, I will call tomorrow and failing that take my buisness elsewhere.
