Question Speedo/odo reading low

Recently entered SV ownership and have an issue. While its nice to do a 40 mile commute and register 30 miles, it does make judging my speed a bit tricky as under-reading speed as well. What could be going on? Local garage cleaned sensor and checked connections but problem persists. Standard in all but a few cosmetic changes. Seriously worried about getting nicked for speeding and then having a CU20 slapped on for non-working speedo if I appealed! Any suggestions appreciated.

Bit more detail may help, methinks. At 5500 in 6th reads 47mph. Steady, no random numbers, but wrong.

OMG. No wonder everyone got out of my way!! Mechanic said it looked ok, but must be something not obvious to naked eye. Better get replacement before replacement licence required!!
Thanks for your help..

check it is ok first before moving on. it's a magnetic rotor that sits in a housing. it fits into equally spaced areas in the front wheel. they are easy to break as they are quite brittle (only about £20 i think from Suzuki). check this yourself or someone 1st.
do you trust the garage you took your bike to, are they clued up on the SV/Suzukis'?

They're pretty good and seem more interested in repeat business than making a fortune. He seems pretty well versed in SVs as he originally said he would check all connections from sensor to speedo as he sited this as a common issue. Tyres look pretty new, so maybe a ham-fisted tyre fitter?
