I've done myself in playing fives (can't put any weight on my right foot) but more importantly I'm sitting on EBay looking at things like this for getting to work cheaply instead of using public transport... I don't wanna use the Street R as thats a toy.

If cheap is what you want, find a tatty old 125 - mpg alone would win out surely?

I'd need motorway ability so 250 is probably a minimum...

Dont knock it. I know a few hardy bike riders on here that have used or are using scooters as a means to get around for various injuries/health issues.
If i was to start biking at this time and was going to do commuting as its main purpose, then i for one would be looking at a super scooter that for sure. More comfortable, more MPG, a boot!! Dont be ashamed. |

I'd avoid anything Italian and look for a Taiwanese (not Chinese) one instead, they are infinitely more reliable.

Don't go for Chinese at all.
Best scooters I've heard best reviews about are the Aerox, Honda lead and I have a Malaguti Phantom which is a cracker. |

Having, as I do, a refreshed perspective on this subject I'd say do it.
They're better than most riders think, the modern Yamahas in particular are very good indeed, the T-Max and X-Max 500s are rockets. They have convenience of use that motorcycles don't have, this doesn't offset their lack of true bike capability, but as day to day two wheeled transport they are fantastically easy to use. If you want motorway ability you really need a 400 at least, the 250s can't comfortably sustain motorway speeds. Many of the larger ones hold their value and are definitely not cheap transport, I'd really like a Yam 500 or a Suzuki 650, but they're both a significant investment. The good: Comfy. Weather protection. Convenience. Economy, especially the newer fuel injected ones. Big boot as standard. The not so good: Suspension. Many of them aren't good, my 400 Suzuki is abysmal, the shock is well past its best but I rode a new one and that's not great either. Finesse in riding, there isn't any. I know, this sounds odd, but the auto transmission and clutch does it's own thing which is mostly fine, sometimes however I feel a bit disconnected from what's happening and would like more control.
