Default How do I set up an EWAN network?

I've put my BT homehub at the main phone point in the house to get a better speed. It then goes in to a devolo AV Homeplug. The other homeplug works fine when I plug it straight in to my pc. But I want to use my Billion 7800N to distribute the internet from the homeplug.

Been doing some googling and have set up the Billion to EWAN mode, protocol to PPPoE, put in the broadband username, set DNS to auto (also tried copying the DNS addresses from the homehub's settings), auth. protocol is auto, IP address is auto

But nothing shows up as connected in the homehub's settings. The billions status just says, connecting, no response...

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Wow just set it to Pure Bridge instead of PPPoE and it changed from the billion settings to the homehub settings

So it's working now

only problem is, how do I get to the billions settings when both routers have the same IP access address ?

Essentially you can't, having conflicting IP addresses on the network will make one of the devices unreachable. Which device depends on how ARP cache tables have been populated on the devices. You will need to change the management IP address on one of the devices. If the Billion device is working as an unmanaged switch now then you shouldn't need to do any config to it to keep it working I wouldn't have thought so maybe change that IP to something else in the same subnet.

Ok I've found that pure bridge mode is no use, as it only allows one device to connect at one time.

I still can't get the EWAN PPPoE mode to connect

there is your problem right there.

what happens when a computer with the same IP tries to connect to the network?

WTF are you trying to do as regards to your network?

I've changed the billions IP now.

BT homehub is at the main phone point for fastest speed. Wireless won't reach my PC so I've got a homeplug connected to the BT homehub and one at my PC. But I need more than one ethernet for other devices and also want WiFi. So I want the billion router to distribute the internet from the homeplug

So you want it in Switched (or bridged) mode. PPPoE is a protocol that is used in terminating links such as your internet connection. Make sure when using the billion that you use the switch ports - so if there is a port with WAN on the label, don't use it. Also ensure that there is no DHCP or any other service enabled on the billion... all the network services should be handled by the device acting as the router (in your case the BT home hub). Also check that the home hub has DHCP enabled etc.

simples. billion should be an access point. the only problem you are likely to get is 2 different access points throughout the house if the homehub is wifi so you will need to connect to either where and when needed.

you have main network IP then each individual item after that is a node or a seprate network. a new network should point it's gateway to the homehub for internet.

there is a more complicated way to do all of this but it requires you to make the homehub the ip address server. and turn off all other servers in the network and point to the homehub.

In the billion settings the main port can be ADSL or EWAN.

ADSL protocol can be PPPoE, PPPoA, MPoA, IPoA or pure bridge.

EWAN protocol can be 'obtain an ip address automatically', 'fixed ip address', 'PPPoE' or 'pure bridge'.

Which one should I be on?
