Hey, My name is Heather, I'm new to the forum & the SV world! I passed my full licence in August 2012 so I was looking at moving up to a bigger bike & selling my 125cc! A friend recommended a SV because of it being a good all rounder & not too steep on the insurance! So I started to look on-line to see what was available. I did all my training on the Gladius & liked the riding position so thought that a SV Naked may be a good bike to start with! After looking into a few on offer I came across a Suzuki SV K4 Naked in MINT condition with under 5000miles on the clock! So put an offer in & picked it up! I am really pleased with it! Its immaculate! I rode it home the 40 miles & it was GREAT! with the weather being so bad & me being busy I didn't manage to get out on it again til January 2013, but I kept amused buy fitting it with a belly pan, seat cowl & some radiator fairings!
Unfortunately I was planning on going out on it a couple of weeks ago (April 2013) & I experienced a few issues: Start bike up & all is well, it'll idle with no problems, when I put it into 1st & let out clutch with a bit of throttle it cuts out. Thought that maybe its me being a little light with the throttle & newish to riding but it isn't! (Got an experienced rider friend to check it out & he encountered the same problem) I managed to get riding & up through the gears where I didn't experience any stalling issues (to make it home after breaking down!), it only seems to happen when the revs are low & I'm coming to a stop. You can't even save it from stalling by pulling in the clutch, the engine just cuts out. The bike will start up without any signs of problems & whilst its in neutral idling away you wouldn't think anything was wrong but as soon as 1st is engaged & you start to pull away it conks out? I've been reading the threads of people who have experienced similar issues & there are suggestions of possible side stand switch failures, TPS Sensor problem, Bad Coil etc. I've managed to look at the fuses just hoping that it would be something simple! but none of them are blown & with the help of some biker mates we had a quick investigation but no luck! So its being taken to a garage tomorrow & hopefully hooking it up to a diagnostic machine will result in it being fixed! I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything like this & what results had they had! totally gutted that it's off the road when the weathers looking up! |

Mine would start and pull away, but would occasionally just stall as I slowed done even with clutch in. I found the clutch was not adjusted correctly, way too much free play. Might be your problem.
Also replaced clutch switch due to other issues and was amazed by the crap that built up in it. Just another thought? Kermit Edit: should point out mines a k7 naked. Just encase there's any differences. Last edited by Kermit650; 29-04-13 at 09:00 PM. |

Its probably going to make me seem a but thick! but I honestly don't know. I haven't made any mechanical/tuning adjustments to the bike & up until now the bike rode fine, no probs. Will the idle speed need adjusting from time to time? Or should it only be tweaked if there are problems? (Sorry if this is a stupid question!?!?)

To low an idle speed can cause some of the symptoms you describe. It certainly caused me issues with stalling on my SV.
IIRC it should be set anywhere between 1300 to 1500rpm I'd check and adjust that as necessary first and also the clutch adjustment as well.

Only occasionally needs adjusting.
The throttle linkages need tweaking every now and again (throttle body balancing), when these go out a bit the idle speed can drop. Or any other general "sore spots" in servicing can reduce the idle speed and general low-speed running smoothness and cause stalling. Don't bother with diagnostic machine, you just need someone who knows what they're about to look at it I reckon. If there are no FI warning lights machine won't tell you much.

Is it only as you start to pull away or if you have it in gear and hold clutch in?

The problem first started when it was put in 1st & I let out the clutch, but also found that if its left in neutral & you give it some throttle, let it idle & repeat it'll cut out as well. My mates who know more about bikes than me said that it sounded like it was firing on one cylinder? I thought I saw CHEC on the display at one point?

Get friendly with Yorkie Chris, throw enough money and cider at him and your bike will be fixed in no time.

Just thought I'd update! Picked bike up from garage & the spark plugs have been changed which seems to have solved the stalling/cutting out problem. Rode it home & experienced no problems so fingers crossed problem resolved!
