Hi guys, just bought a stock '03 pointy S model.
My questions are below and relate to the air/fuel mix by adding an exhaust (slip on only) and after market air filter: 1. Does this not just lean out the mixture and make the bike run hot? 2. I've ordered a Fuel exhaust which should arrive next week. I was going to leave the air filter as stock. Will I really have any benefit, performance or otherwise, from changing the air filter as well? I don't want to spend any more on performance mods as i'm happy with what i've got, and even then the exhaust is just to have that v-twin rumble and to let the bike breath a little more easily. Thanks for your help. |

Congrats on your purchase.
To answer your questions: 1) If it's just a slip on it shouldn't affect the air/fuel ratio enough to warrant fueling adjustment. 2)I'd leave the filter alone with a slip on exhaust (apart from maybe checking it's general condition). Any after market filter which increases air flow will affect the air / fuel mixture. You won't get much benefit from changing the filter unless you have a full aftermarket exhaust system. The Fuel exhaust will do exactly what you are looking for and will sound great ![]() Last edited by Pricey12; 21-05-13 at 09:59 AM. |

reality check, you'll release some more noise, but don't expect any great power gains, as to the air filter, as long as you stay away from the more serious ones (RS race and alike) it should be well within the confines of the FI to manage, personally I'd fit a road K&N just for the cost saving over time, but that all depends on mileage you do.
a couple of spacers under the front tank bolts will give you an increased induction noise, if that's what you're after, but once again no real performance increase. Cheers Mark.

Thanks for your replies.
In that case i'll have a looky at what the current filter condition is like and replace with another stock if necessary. On another note... and completely off topic...how much bike do I have to remove in order to change the plugs? Given that the bike is 10 years old i'm not confident they have been changed recently. Nothing wrong with the bike...just want to make sure its running as well as it could be. |

rear one, side panels off/ seat off/life tank, it's there. front fairings off undo bolt connecting bottom of rad to cylinder head and you can ease the rad forwards enough to get the SV plug spanner in, you you don't have the articulated one, you'll have the drain the cooling system and remove the rad.
Cheers Mark.

didn't worry about removing the front fairing when I changed the front plug, did need to remove the plastic splash plate under the lower yoke though, then undo the rad lower bolt, tilt it forwards and remove the plug.

Thanks again for your helpful replies. I'm going to have a day in the garage at the weekend and do the exhaust, tail tidy and plugs in one go!..it may take some time...and i don't have a drill to relocate the license plate mounting holes.....doh!
