Default Debrix emulator in Pointy questions.

Hello Everyone

For various reasons my SV hasn't seen much use the past few years and has had to live outside. Now i've moved house and work has settled down I'm planning to give the bike a good clean up / upgrade this winter.

I won't go into all the boring details but I am going to do a suspension upgrade. GSXR rear shock is sat on the shelf in the garage ready to be installed so now it's time to decide what to do to the front.

Current thinking is to go for Debrix emulators (gutted I missed the group buy!) but I have a few questions I was wondering if the forum could help me with :-

1) Are new front springs required for the emulator. And if not how much of a difference will new ones make? Racetech says 0.9 for my 13 1/2 stone

2) What fork oil / weight is reccomended for the the setup with emulators?

3) What height should the oil be filled to with this the emulator setup.

4) As far as I can understand from reading all the posts, steps required for installation are :-
a) emulators to be screwed down 2.5 turns
b) ring to be made to hold emulators central (I have a pointy)
c) trim down spacer by height of emulator body
d) drill out lower damping rod holes to 10mm
e) plug upper rebound holes
Any steps i've missed?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers

Dave

when checking the racetech site did you opt for street or race when you put your weight in?

if you put different springs in they are sometimes longer so you have to reduce the hight of the spacer to compensate for the emulator + extra on spring hight.

oil is a personal preference but remember the thicker it is the harsher the ride will be, but to thin and it wont damp properly. your only 13.5st so Pro RSF 10wt would more than likely do.

I don't equate weight with oil viscosity... oil to match spring rate to control rebound.

for 13.5 stone I would probably go 0.85 or 0.9 for fast road or track.

remember with emus you're taking a lot of comp (harshness) control away from oil weight as valve will pop off! That's the point of them!

With K-Tech springs I didn't need to cut the top spacer, just screwed out the adjuster as far as it would go. Stiffer springs (0.85) made a good improvement as well and I'm 11st (but not 'required' by the emulators). Oil height is the same as standard.

Thanks for the replies. I take it the springs are an essential upgrade then?

I used the street option in the race tech calculator but will probably buy ktech springs.

Spend a lot of time riding with a pillion so sounds like 0.9 are about right.

Worth doing at the same time if you have the forks apart, for me it improved the ride and reduced nose dive when braking, without reducing comfort or anything else negative. Not sure if 0.9 would be a little on the stiff side for every day use, as YC says prob 0.85 would be a better everyday/commute choice.

Good upgrade even without changing springs but if budget allows do both emulator and springs.

I'm about your weight (maybe a few pies extra these days) and I believe I have 0.85 springs in with the emulators and its very good. Without the emulators it didn't dive but was a bit harsh over bumps.

Your step by step for emulator install is correct.

I used Silkolene pro fst 10w which is recommended according to the viscosity charts thingy, that and yorkie chris said get it so I did

Thanks for the reply quik_d

Looks like emulator and 0.85 springs are going to be right for me, just need to get them ordered now

I'm in cardiff and already done everything you're about to do so let us know if you need a hand with anything (or just let me borrow your garage so I can strip my bike apart and start my next mad project)
