Could it be that it's just (too) full?

No experience what so ever of that bike, but it might be worth dropping the oil. Most viewing windows have a metal plate quite close to the glass in my (admittedly very 4 stroke biased) experienced "black" has ment "full of used oil, way past sight glass".

If you catch the oil in a clean container as you drain it you can either put it back, or change it depending on how certain you are of how long it's been in there.

That's spooky, I spent this afternoon looking at a KMX200 I dragged out of the corner of my garage and I'm trying to decide if it's worth fixing up, or getting rid of as is....

If it helps any the sight glass on mine appears to be clear, and my oil level is right at the top of the glass so you can only see a tiny bit of air with the bike level, but as soon as you tip it away from you the level drops down the glass. No idea if that is right, but I've never touched the gearbox oil and it hasn't blown up yet (well at least that bit hasn't!).

That's one of the bits I'm trying to find....... I'm pretty sure it's a 1988 F reg. We got it from a mate several years ago when the kids were growing up for them to blat around the garden on so I took the lights and road bits off it then, and they're in a box somewhere in the loft above the garage. My daughter lost interest and my son is now helping himself to my bikes..... so decided it was time to make some room and out the KMX. Does a photo help ID it?

I'll let you know if we decide to break it, but it's still a good bike (despite the above abuse.....) so it would be a shame if we do.
