Default Interesting engine design.

Interesting design. Rather than just bolting a generator to an otherwise standard engine this design completely removes the crank and makes the piston itself move the stator.

The electronic valves are an interesting development, the last I heard Ferrari and the like were trying to do this as it allows infinitely variable cam profiles. I hadn't heard of anyone pulling it off though.

Default Interesting engine design.

Now that is some seriously cool tech.

Would those dimensions be roughly equiv to say a 500 parallel twin?

If so I am imagining a much lighter and quicker bike with an epic range!

Great idea! I'm wondering what returns the piston to the top of the stroke though...

Default Interesting engine design.

Gas spring chamber under the piston to return it

Clever! Most impressed that it's more energy efficient that during the kinetic energy directly.

So, potentially, you can have an entirely electric transmission with it's lovely instant full torque and just use that engine as a generator to top the batteries as and when required. Sounds promising to me.

The "free piston engine" concept has been around for donkey's years, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-piston_engine

I believe a few companies are seriously looking at units suitable for auto generator use.

Vaxhall though so too.
Vauxhall Ampera is primarily powered by electric motors but has a four-cylinder combustion engine and generator to keep the car running when the batteries are exhausted.

Also Alexander Dennis coaches build a similar system (granted BAE systems inputted greatly on the design), which is now proven.
