Default Caliper Seizing

this is what happens when you don't service your callipers and think that pumping the pistons out and smearing Red Rubber Grease on the sides of the pistons is a cure.

now let me explain, the white stuff you see under the seal is furring due to a reaction of the alloy of various substances such as road salt and brake fluid.

the furring causes the seal to effectively shrink in size due to there being extra material (the furring) under the seal, this in turn grabs the piston more and eventually with enough furring seizes the piston movement. no ammount of sparing brake cleaner or greasing the piston will remove the furring. you have to strip the calliper down to its individual components to do the job properly.

over the next week or so (when i can be arzed) i will strip and service the calliper in the picture to show people how its done.

You should be ashamed of yourself to let it get that bad

there is no way on earth i would let mine get in that state. it was the mate complaining about his brakes not working so i swapped out a set i had already done.

when i started to pull it apart and seen how bad it was i decided that they would be an ideal candidate to show people how to service callipers.

Having bodged my way through a caliper stripdown it'd be good to see it done properly.
Did use your dremel tip. Worked a treat.
Top marks for a show how.

More threads like this please. Ideal stickies!
