SV650 brake improvements?
Hi
Looking for some help and advice on brake upgrades, currently they are shocking on the front so if anyone has upgraded them please let me know what you have done and the difference its made. I already have HEL lines and new pads but they are still crap. cheers Dale |

Re: sv650 brakes
overhaul calipers. SV brakes aren't the best but should be perfectly adequate for the job. If they're dire then there's a problem.

Re: sv650 brakes
Are the pistons functioning as they should - perhaps one or more pistons are ceased - worth a strip & clean before forking out the money for new callipers.
Perhaps try replacing the pads & break lines for braided lines |

Re: sv650 brakes
I'd advise replacing piston seals - these can pull the piston too far back from the disk surface, giving too much lever travel before biting.

Re: sv650 brakes
They are sliding calipers,so the two halves of the caliper need to slide apart and together.Any sticking there and they lose effectiveness.

Re: sv650 brakes
Gotta laugh every time I read "they'll do the job". It's a perfectly valid question to wonder if there's better calipers out there, and there is.
Sv's are woeful at braking, Suzuki must had had sub 50mph bumbling in mind when putting the stoppers on both the 650 and the 1000. Both bikes definitely deserved, and in my opinion...need, better brakes. I rebuilt the calipers on my old 650 - new seals, new pads (ebc sintered) and all the pistons removed and cleaned to within an inch of their life and they were still crap, admittedly marginally better due to the 3 stuck pistons working once sorted, but still awful. However, Daler, this all depends on the money and effort you're willing to splurge on the bike to get it stopping better. The Gixxer front end with the four pot anchors will do the job, improve the handling and increase the stopping power by miles. Costs though.

Re: sv650 brakes
If 2 finger braking without any hassle isn't good enough, both in town and on motorways, then I agree with you.
If you can't lock the front wheel with 2 fingers, there's something wrong. Not including those with ABS.

Always have a chuckle when I hear people complaining about how crap the SV suspension, brakes, etc etc are. Infact I'd challenge half the folks that moan to a friendly braking competion with me...I'd be happy to do it with my 125cc, SV with standard brake calipers and then an SV with GSXR calipers. And they'd still lose....
