Hello all,
Looking for some diagnostic help from the forum. I was riding to work this morning on my 99 SV650 & just as I rolled off from about 60-70 mph noticed extra engine noise - when I stopped the noise was a very loud harsh rattling - listen to the youtube below - anyone ideas what it could be? Engine still seems to have power, both cylinders firing, but noise sounds bad. I slowly continued the short distance to work & then got a breakdown truck to get it home to avoid making it worse. https://youtu.be/xyUERyPGJCk George |

Closer listening & loud rattle is from front cylinder. I think 1st thing to check is Cam Chain Tensionser. Bike has 40K & CCT is original. Could CCT cause such a loud rattle?

Hi, hard to tell exactly from the YT clip, but it couldn't be a blown exhaust gasket on the front cylinder, could it?

Hello all,
Turned out to be front cam chain tensioner. When I removed it, I could see it was stuck in retracted position - i.e. not putting tension on the chain guide. Wound it out\in & it started working but a bit sticky then it stopped working. Took it apart & could see that spring had shorn off just a small bit where it sits across the slot at top - so when I was turning the slot, the spring was not winding up. Anway, ordered K3 replacement. While waiting saw a post that suggested you could just bend a fresh bit of the spring across the slot which worked ok. As K3's were ordered, decided to wait & fit K3 fronyt which worked fine and engine running sound & quiet so luckily no damage done. But I have a spare back up if I ever need it - original lasted over 40k miles so not to shabby I guess. Any thoughts on should I change the back cyl to K3 tensioner? Hear it's a lot harder than front to get at? George |

It cant hurt to change the rear cct, removing to rear footpegs can help with access..

Rear one was easier to do on mine than the front, curvy as well.
