I have had my '02 SV650 for 2 years now and found the riding position uncomfortable.
I love the attitude of the R1200GS but it is too much bike for me. I bought the handlebars though and the hand guards I have used on a few bikes now. this is one of those projects if you knew how much work it would be you would never have started but as time and money are invested I continued. the handlebars and high and wide compared to the stock bars and taper too from the ends to the middle. I put 4 inch risers on first to change the bar size and further raise them. I was happy to take the risk of over shooting and having the bars too wide and high rather than not high enough. I had to extend the clutch cable and brake line. the choke uses a custom part. whole thing looks terrible but I love the riding position. It is so comfortable and dominant on the road especially with the lights. other road users just treat you better and notice you more. I have put lights on these are cheapo eagle DRL off ebay with a £2 LED dimmer\controller. I can make the lights flash tho I know this is not road legal. They have proved pretty reliable. I have attached them to the mirrors with B&Q exterior grab adhesive then covered this with 3M reflective tape this looks hideous I admit but it is reflective. the hand-guards from the BMW are brilliant. you feel like terminator 2 just from adding them to the bike. they never fail or cause trouble 20 mins with some cable ties and snips give years of protected hands. I have put the lights on a relay to the back light after battery woes. I extended the mirrors to bring them closer and higher they are great mirrors. I hope you like my bike I love it. I would do the handlebar raising differently next time. the riser passes too much vibration up and must be a weak spot. this is only noticeable through the mirrors which are extended. It would have been wiser to get a different bar with more raise than the BMW ones which would have been simpler, sturdier, cheaper and less downright weird looking. any questions I will happily answer. If it keeps you riding your SV it must be good, must be the highest handlebar position I've seen on here.
Its all good.

Possibly one of the most hideous things I've ever seen but if it means you enjoy riding it then that's what matters.

The advance retard lever is the choke lever I had to bodge it.
under the bag is keep the front electronics for the lights at the front ( I attach a picture) . And the control for the heated grips I use those wago connectors they are cheap and reliable and flexible. Last edited by jon_valentine; 05-09-15 at 09:27 PM. |
