... but not as hot as Death Valley California which set a record temperature of 130°F or 54°C. (doubts have been cast on the old Death Valley record of 134°F).
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/17/c...-on-earth.html Just over the border in Arizona it's a balmy 115°F.

It's been in the 100-teens this week. Cold snap yesterday though, only 95 when I left the office. You get acclimated, but things get exponentially more dangerous as the temps increase. Having worked in the Mojave I can tell you that your chance of survival decreases pretty dramatically when it goes from 110 to 120. It's nothing to mess around with.
I lived in Chicago for many years and dealt with -20 nearly every winter. I thought I was tough, then I worked in Minnesota where I experienced -30 (and heard about -40!). That is a different ballgame. Where I live it hovers around 65 to 95 pretty much year-round. We get our week or two of this in the Summer but I'll take it over the opposite extreme. |

Are you in the Valley? I owned a condo in Lake Forest, CA and it was rare for it to go over 90°F, which was good since I didn't have a/c. I used to ride to Idyllwild via Perris and Hemet, the desert floor was only tolerable if you could keep moving, mountains were much cooler.

I was in Edmonton (typed Calgary at first - not sure what I was thinking there) once when it was -30C. Opened a bottle of beer and it turned to frozen slush before I took my first sip.

Ride safe out there. Came in this morning to see paramedics cease chest compressions on a rider vs car at the nearest intersection to the office. He was moving; looks like the bike used to be some kind of old VMax or Magna muscle-bike thing. Sounds like it was the end of a high-speed pursuit. Don't play stupid games. Che, my Dad used to live in Edmonton! He said that was where he learned about seal-skin jackets... I guess you need that for -30 ![]() |
