Trump signs executive order to ban TikTok (2020)
https://www.npr.org/2020/08/06/90001...tok-in-the-u-s Lawsuits... Trump discovers that he's now reaching young people on TikTok. Litigation reaches US Supreme Court who allow ban to stand. Ban comes in Sunday night, TikTok shuts down in advance Trump says he supports (and likes) TikTok, says he will sign executive order overturning ban. TikTok release statement thanking Trump and resume service (for now). TikTok CEO to attend Trump inauguration (donates $50k - a pittance compared to other tech companies). Publicity stunt? "Trump saves the day for young people". I am definitely getting more cynical...

TikTok filed lawsuits through the lower courts until it finally reached the Supreme Court. TikTok is owned by Bytedance who are Chinese and have been accused of using the platform to access details of US citizens. They were told to divest the app to a US owner or be denied access to US. Then Trump stepped in. In theory (as I understand it) a Presidential executive order cannot overrule a Supreme Court judgement but this is 2025 and the Supreme Court is heavily biased towards Republicans. (Trump's picked judges)
