Has anyone here ridden the old 650s, the new 650s and either SV1000? If so, what did you think....

Hi Rich
I have a 1000S, used to ride the old 650S. After 2½ years I had got used to the power of the 650, and even after a full system, BMC filter, JHS jetkit and stacks of other mods I started to get bored at the number of times I had the throttle wound right open waiting for more. The 1000 has cured that alright! Trouble is, after 18 months on the thou I'm not absolutley convinced that it's more fun. To quote something I heard once "It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow". I've done speeds that would see me locked up (based on actual experiences of others) and had the front wheel skimming tarmac well into 3 figures, but is that more fun? Dunno. It certainly doesn't handle like the old 650. Not bad, but not so chuckable. But then an extra 20-30 kilos will do that. The other main reason I changed was physical size. The new shape is a fair bit bigger than the old, and at 6' I felt like I dwarfed the old bike. I wouldn't say I regret the change, but maybe, just maybe I'll go for a new shape 650S instead at some point in the future. But then again a 650 would have struggled with the 1800 mile 2-up tour of Scotland last week! Undecided? Me? Nah! |

Cant believe you say you dwarf the 650 at 6 foot. im six foot one and have plenty of room on the bike.
Ihave not ridden the 1000 yet but i have ridden the new shape SV and feel that you can not 'throw it around' quite as easily as the original...... but maybe im just biased! ![]() |

I changed from the old shape 650S to a 1000S about a month ago, I had the 650 for about a year and a half and done 10,000 miles on it after doing several long weekends on it I decided that a bigger bike was needed. Decided to have a test ride on a 1000 enjoyed it its not as chuckaboutable as the 650 but still loads of fun with similar engine characteristics.
A change I don't regret. ![]() |

Have a look at http://www.urbanbiker.co.uk/reviews/sv1k.htm which was a review I wrote while I still had my SV650....

Good helpful review, I'm wondering whether to move up to the SV1000S next year, but haven't yet made up my mind. Curse this indecision
